“There’s a lot of people made a lot of sacrifices so we could come into this chamber and debate, not to shout each other down.”

IN WHAT NOW appears to becoming a daily event Ceann Comhairle Seán Barrett admonished TDs again this morning for their “roaring and shouting”.

During another rowdy Leaders’ Questions in the Dáil, Seán Barrett advised TDs to “take the morning off and go and watch television and see what it sounds like to be listening to the roaring and shouting”.

In strongly-worded remarks, he told TDs: “There’s a lot of people made a lot of sacrifices so we could come into this chamber and debate, not to shout each other down.”

Later, Barrett got into a row with Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams who had complained over speaking slots afforded to his party during last night’s debate on the Budget.

A lengthy dispute ensued ironically delaying a debate on Dáil reform proposals which were eventually passed meaning TDs are set to sit earlier and for longer in the coming weeks.

Later Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore noted: “If there was ever a case for this reform, I think the conduct of business here this morning makes it very adequately.”

Gilmore: “The place for any young person is not permanently in front of a flatscreen”
