A MAN HAS died after a tree fell on his car in Donegal early this morning during Storm Éowyn.

Gardaí are at the scene where emergency services are facing “extremely difficult conditions” due to the weather. The body of the deceased man remains at the scene, gardaí said. 

At around 5.30am this morning, Gardaí were alerted to a serious road traffic incident at Feddyglass, Raphoe, Donegal, a spokesperson said. 

Gardaí said they are working with local authority and third party contractors to remove the remains of the deceased man from the scene.

The N14 road where the incident took place remains closed.

Forensic collision investigator and divisional scenes of crime have commenced investigation at the scene.

Spokespeople for the various services are pleading with people to shelter in place in so far as possible during the weather warnings.

The incident occurred while the weather warning status was still Status Orange in the area. A Status Red wind warning came into effect at 7am in Donegal. 

Cork

In Cork City, it is understood that a 19-year-old man has been taken to hospital after a caravan in the Spring Lane Halting site in Ballyvolane turned over.

Units of the Cork City Fire Service attended at the scene, and the man sustained non life threatening injuries.

An Garda Síochána appealed to every person using the “public roads after the expiration of the weather warnings in their area and over this coming weekend, to exercise extreme caution, Slow Down, Expect the Unexpected and Stay Safe”.

“There will be fallen trees, structural and other unexpected debris, and fallen or damaged live electricity wires in many areas across the country. Trees and structures may be unstable.

“The emergency services and our colleagues in Local Authorities and Utility Service providers will be busy across the road network identifying and repairing damaged infrastructure,” the statement added.
