Unstable chemical

Controlled explosion carried out on unstable chemical at Cork school

The chemical was discovered during a routine audit at a secondary school in Cork city this evening.

AN UNSTABLE CHEMICAL was made safe at a secondary school in Cork City this evening by members of the Defence Forces.

An Army Bomb Disposal Team made safe a quantity of an unstable chemical known as Dinitrophenylhydrazine at a secondary school in Farranree in Cork City just before 8pm this evening.

The unstable chemical had been found during a routine audit of chemicals in the school laboratory with the Defence Forces called to the scene.

A team arrived at 6.50pm and removed the chemical to waste ground where a controlled explosion was carried out in order to make the chemical safe.

The scene was then declared safe at 7.40pm.

Dinitrophenylhydrazine is a chemical re-agent that is often used in school laboratories. It is relatively sensitive to shock, heat and friction and can crystallise and become unstable over time.

The Defence Forces said that this evening’s call out marked the 99th for their Army Bomb Disposal Teams so far this year.

It was the second call out today to deal with an unstable chemical after a team earlier attended a pharmacy in Thurles where a quantity of Picric Acid was discovered.
