Daily Fix: Friday

Politicians blow hot and cold with Vincent Browne; James Reilly is on his tod with the girls; and the sun shines on a Fine Gael/Labour coalition.

Every evening, TheJournal.ie brings your Daily Fix: all the highlights of today’s campaign trail.

GOOD DAY FOR:

  • Vincent Browne – Fianna Fáil’s Micheál Martin said he ‘loves’ the TV3 broadcaster. Aww…
  • Fine Gael/Labour Coalition – the latest Irish Times Ipsos/MRBI poll revealed that more voters – 34 per cent – wanted Fine Gael and Labour to form a coalition after the election that any other potential government.
  • James Reilly – who will be ‘blessed among women’ after most deputy leaders from the main political parties give a thumbs up to having their own debate.

BAD DAY FOR:

  • Vincent Browne – Enda Kenny said that he would not appear on “any programme that Vincent Browne has anything to do with”.
  • Brian Cowen – he might not be running in the general election, but that hasn’t prevented our favourite Taiwanese animators from having a go at him…

JIBE OF THE DAY:

Brendan Howlin, the Labour party’s spokesperson on European Affairs, nicknamed the taoiseach “caretaker Cowen” – saying he had no authority to make decisions at the EU summit taking place in Brussels today.

ELECTORAL DANGER OF THE DAY:

Biting off your nose to spite your face: Enda Kenny has left himself open to criticism from all sides after refusing to take part in a debate with Vincent Browne – with FF saying Kenny is “dictating who can and can’t chair the interviews” and his behaviour is “either the most incredible political arrogance or cowardice”. Ouch.
