• Allied Irish Bank has insisted that “payment will be made” after a rumour that Ireland has missed a scheduled interest payment on its bonds sent the price of short-term borrowing spiralling earlier today.
• Three further people have been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of teenager David Byrne in Dublin over the weekend. A total of seven teenagers have now been arrested in connection with the killing.
• Gardaí are appealing for information after a 21-year-old woman was reported missing after failing to return home on Monday as usual after college. Maryam Sulieman-Ali has been missing from her home at Carrow Road, Drimnagh, Dublin 12 since Monday.
• Eamon Gilmore has said that he hopes to declare Ireland’s recognition of a full Palestinian state during his tenure as Minister for Foreign Affairs.
• The government has pledged to review the payment of child benefit after it emerged that it had spent over as €15 million on benefits on thousands of children who live overseas.
• A German man who fathered eight children with his stepdaughter and forced her into prostitution has been convicted of 162 counts of sexual abuse by a judge who called him a “pitiless egoist”.
• An Israeli court has sentenced former Israeli President Moshe Katsav, 65, to seven years in prison for rape, making him the highest-ranking Israeli official ever imprisoned.
• Simon Cunnane, a reader of TheJournal.ie, has been following the commentary on civil servants’ ‘privilege days’ – and believes those running it could learn a little from the management style of Henry Ford.
• The European Hairdressing Championships will take place in Dublin in the RDS on 29 and 30 May. More than 40 countries will be represented by 5,000 hair and beauty experts – in an event that will give an estimated boost of €1.5 million to the Irish economy.
