Daily Fix: Wednesday

In today’s Fix: the report into abuse in Cloyne is published – but where is Bishop John Magee?;protests over plans to cut Special Needs Assitants; and Murdoch withdraws BSkyB bid.

EVERY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you a round-up of the day’s news, as well as the bits and pieces you may have missed.

  • The report into child sexual abuse in the Diocese of Cloyne was published this afternoon, containing strong condemnation of the manner in which abuse claims were dealt within the diocese. The Vatican has been harshly criticised for its interference in proceedings, as was the bishop who ran the diocese at the time, John Magee. Although many groups and individuals have responded to the publication of the report, tonight the whereabouts of Magee is not known – with some suggesting he may have left the country.
  • Today demonstrators congregated outside Leinster House to protest over government plans to cut the jobs of 200 Special Needs Assistants. The government says it must cut the positions under the terms of the EU-IMF bailout – however some independents have called for a renegotiation on the terms. Finian McGrath told the Dáil this morning that the withdrawal of the positions would leave Ireland in breach of its commitments under the European Convention of Human Rights.
  • Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation has withdrawn its multi-billion pound bid for the satellite broadcaster BSkyB following the controversy surrounding the allegations that some of its newspapers were involved in phone hacking.
  • A report published by the Dáil’s Public Accounts Committee today shows that waste, inefficiency and poor planning still exist across many public bodies.
  • Gardaí have issued an appeal for information regarding the whereabouts of Julis Buls who has been missing from his Galway home since last Thursday. The 30-year-old Latvian national is described as 5 foot 7 inches in, with short blonde hair and blue eyes, and of light build. Anyone with any information as to his whereabouts is asked to contact Tuam Garda station on 093 70840.
  • An official report by the Department of Health into Ireland’s progress in tackling the spread of HIV and AIDS reveals that the country has made significant progress – but that there are still major shortcomings in its approach.
