Cheap and cheerful with many safety features in this 2013 Renault Clio and 2016 Renault Twingo.

TRENDY, FUN AND affordable to run are sometimes hard to find when you are looking for a safe and reliable first-time motor.

However, we think we’ve found two perfect picks with these cars from Renault Belgard.

First up, this 2013 Renault Clio petrol hatchback in Expression trim.

The Renault Clio is a cracking car with trendy looks and some bold styling features, which really makes it stand out. It is a five-door hatchback but the rear door handles are in the C-pillars giving it a sporty three-door profile.

It has a roomy cabin, which comes with a radio with Bluetooth, AUX and USB connection, front electric windows and mirrors and an on-board computer with instant consumption. There is plenty of cabin storage and a huge boot, to boot!

Parents will be happy with the five stars in gained in the EuroNCAP tests and with its great active and passive safety features including ESC stability, ABS, emergency brake assist, cruise control and a speed limiter.

This model has a 1.2-litre petrol engine, which produces 75hp and is mated to a five-speed manual transmission that drives the power to the front wheels. The steering and pedals are light and the suspension affords a comfortable ride – perfect for first-time drivers.

It falls into tax band B1 which means it is €270 to tax a year and it comes with a two-year manufacturer warranty for added peace of mind.

Next is this 2016 Renault Twingo petrol hatchback in Dynamique trim.

The Renault Twingo is a fun, funky city car with plenty of personality. Again, this five-door hatchback, although smaller than the Clio, offers plenty of space inside the cabin.

On the outside, this car comes with 15-inch alloy wheels, pin stripe side decals, chrome touches and body coloured bumpers, handles and mirrors, which are electrically adjusted a heated. Like the Clio, the rear door handles are also hidden in the C-pillars giving this five-door a more sporty three-door look.

Inside, the cabin is roomy and there is plenty of cubbies and bins for storage. The cabin is brightened up with splashes a white around the dash and it is all nice and tactile with a leather steering wheel and grey upholstery.

Tech and safety features include cruise control, speed limiter, USB Connection, Bluetooth, central locking, ABS, EBA (Emergency Brake Assist and ESC (Electronic Stability Control) with side wind assist.

This model has a rear fitted, stop/start, 1.0-litre petrol engine, which produces 70hp and is mated to a five-speed manual transmission that drives the power to the rear wheels. The naturally aspirated engine is quick to react to the throttle and the suspension set-up offers a comfortable ride around the bumpy city roads.

It falls into tax band A2 which means it is €180 to tax a year and it comes with a five-year manufacturer warranty for added peace of mind.
