Dundalk shooting victim was popular Armagh gaelic footballer

The victim of Sunday morning’s shooting was James Hughes, who was out celebrating Crossmaglen Rangers’ Ulster championship win.

THE VICTIM OF a fatal shooting in Dundalk in the early hours of Sunday morning was a well-known GAA player who was out celebrating his team’s recent Ulster club championship win on the night he died.

James Hughes, 35, was celebrating with his teammates from Crossmaglen Rangers, the famed Armagh club side who won their ninth provincial title two weeks ago.

Hughes had been a longstanding member of the famous club, having been part of the club’s All-Ireland winning senior team in 2000.

His clubmates met in the team clubhouse last night to offer their prayers for Hughes.

Two other people – a female friend of Hughes’, and the man driving their taxi – were shot in the incident, which occurred in the Lis na Dara housing estate in Dundalk shortly before 4am on Sunday morning.

A 32-year-old, being questioned by the Gardaí over the attack, presented himself to Carrickmacross Garda Station later yesterday morning.

He is being detained under section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, meaning he can be held for up to a week before being charged or released.
