Tragedy before Christmas as elderly farmer and his dog killed in household blaze

The fatal fire happened sometime in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A 69-YEAR-OLD FARMER and his dog were killed in a house fire in north Sligo early yesterday morning.

The man – named in local media as Pat Doherty – was found dead in his property near Ballinful in Co. Sligo after an overnight fire.

The fire service wasn’t called to the property until about 7.20am, however it is believed the blaze broke out earlier in the night.

The man’s body was taken to Sligo Regional Hospital and gardaí completed a forensic investigation of the scene.

A garda spokesman told TheJournal.ie that the cause of the fire was under investigation, but at this stage it appeared to be a tragic accident.
