FITNESS FANS, REJOICE: now that the warmer weather has (finally) arrived, events around the country will be significantly less chilly, damp and miserable as they have been all winter. So, we’re celebrating – here are our pick of events that will get your endorphins going this weekend.
1. Take on a countrywide cycle for a fantastic cause
When: April 28th – May 7th Where: Starting in Westmanstown, Dublin, and continuing nationwide
Exercise is great, but exercise for a good cause is even better. The national Cycle Against Suicide, now in its 5th year, kicks off this Saturday and embarks on a tour of the country that stretches from Dublin to Newry to Ballina. Overnight stays are included, and naturally, you can sign up to cycle part of the journey if 800km seems a little daunting. Get the details here.
2. Go on an adventure across one of Ireland’s most beautiful islands
When: Saturday, April 28th Where: Clare island, off Westport, Co Mayo
Set against the gorgeous scenery of Clare Island, this race has two parts – one slightly gentler than the other. Both involve a run, cycle, climb and beach dash – though one is 24km long and the other a mere 15km.
If you’re a budding triathlon fan but don’t love swimming, or if you just want to partake in a great race in an unusual setting, this is the event for you. Oh, and there’s a stellar after party, too. Find out more here.
3. Cycle through Connemara with only the moonlight for company
When: Saturday, April 28th Where: Killary, Co Galway
Try out a cycle with a difference this weekend with the Night Rider cycle in Killary. Cyclists set off at 7pm, and cycle across Connemara through the night. It’s a glorious way to experience one of Ireland’s most beautiful places – just be sure to bring a flask of coffee with you, as you’ll be cycling into the wee hours. Sign up here.
4. Give a triathlon a try with plenty of other newbies
When: Sunday, April 29th Where: Letterkenny, Co Donegal
Ever wanted to try out a triathlon but felt a little intimidated? You’re not alone. Letterkenny Triathlon Club are encouraging newbies to give it a go with their Try-a-Tri event this Sunday – it’s only open to those who haven’t participated in a triathlon before. The course consists of a swim (choose from a 200m or 400m), bike ride and run, totalling the length of a half-marathon. Find out more here.
