Five injured as hotel lift plummets three floors

A group of wedding guests had to be hospitalised after the accident in Killarney, Co Kerry.

FIVE WEDDING GUESTS were taken to hospital yesterday after a hotel lift dropped three storeys before hitting the ground.

It’s understood the lift was at the second floor of the Plaza Hotel in Killarney, Co Kerry when it fell to the basement car park at around 2.30pm. The five occupants were rescued by the fire service and taken to Kerry General Hospital for treatment, according to RTE. Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening but they may have suffered broken bones, sources at the scene told the Irish Times.

The Irish Examiner reports that the five were three brothers and two of their wives, from Dublin. It’s believed they were part of a wedding party at the hotel.

Spokesman for the Health and Safety Authority, Mark Ryan, told TheJournal.ie the body would be launching a probe into the accident: “We are going to be investigating. We’ll go down and take a look at it,” he said.

There is currently no garda investigation into the incident.
