'The sport looks really cool, there's no getting away from that': Claire Walsh takes us to her favourite Dublin spots

In our Dublin Drives series, she talks us through her varied career and sea swimming as a religion.

WELCOME TO DUBLIN Drives with DoneDeal, where we’ll be taking a series of journeys with familiar Dublin faces to their favourite spots around the capital.

In this episode we’re joined by free diver, Claire Walsh, as she talks us through breaking into a niche sport, the best spots in Dublin for swimming, and how Dryrobes are life!

We join Claire in the comfortable surroundings of the brand new Ford Mustang Mach-E, a fully electric SUV that boasts a range of up to 600km.

Hailing from a landlocked County originally, the water wasn’t a natural career choice for Claire who explained to presenter Dave O’Caoimh, exactly what she does for a living:

I find the question, ‘what do you do?’ panics me because I do lots of different things on lots of different days. Primarily I’m a free diver, I’m a breath work instructor or facilitator, I do some public speaking, but it is kind of all tied around water, free diving and breath.. or holding your breath as the case may be!

What exactly is free diving I hear you ask? It’s pretty simple to explain but incredibly dangerous to try if you haven’t been taught correctly, it’s a form of underwater diving that relies on breath-holding until resurfacing, rather than the use of breathing apparatus such as scuba gear.

You basically have to be a complete boss who can hold your breath for an excruciatingly long amount of time. Absolutely no bother to our Claire!

Watch the video above as we take Claire on a drive through South Dublin, hear how she first found free diving, and learn some tricks of the trade when it comes to her fascinating sport.

We’ll also see if Dave can handle the water as well as he handles the road!
