Fujifilm discontinues production of motion picture film

The company had said last year that the dramatic decrease in demand has become far too great a burden.

FUJIFILM HAS ANNOUNCED that it has now stopped production of the majority of motion picture film. The company had previously announced plans to halt production in September last year “in order to adapt to the recent rapid transition of digitalisatation” in film production.

Last year Fujifilm said that the “dramatic decrease in demand” has become far too great a burden to be “covered by corporate efforts” like price reductions.

In a statement yesterday the company thanked customers for their “patronage during the long history of manufacture, sales and marketing”.

The products will  be available until inventory is exhausted and Fujifilm said it will still continue to provide products and services for the digital workflow of film production and exhibition such as lenses and projectors.

The following products in discontinuation of manufacturing are:

  • Color Positive Film
  • Color Negative Film
  • B&W Positive and Negative Film
  • Intermediate Film
  • Sound Recording Film
  • High Contrast Panchromatic Films
  • Chemicals (Japan only)

Just last week the company also announced plans to implement a worldwide price increase for its photographic films which it said could see products increase in price by at least a double digit as the demand for these products continues to fall.

However the company said it remains “committed to photographic products” despite its price change.
