Galway businesses destroyed in severe weekend fire

A fire on Saturday night at the Riverside Commercial Estate ruined three businesses, causing millions in damages.

A MAJOR FIRE in an industrial estate just outside Galway city over the weekend may have caused million of euro in damages, it has emerged.

The fire engulfed the Riverside Commercial Estate on the Tuam Road on Saturday evening, completely destroying three buildings and causing significant damage to a number of other units.

The fire broke out shortly before 7pm, and needed five fire units – two from Galway, and one each from Tuam, Loughrea and Galway – to bring it under control. There were no injuries, and RTÉ reports that none of the premises were occupied when the fire began.

Galway Bay FM said some of the premises that were completely gutted included the Galway Liquidation Centre, and Westlink car Sales.

Nearby business units said they were lucky to escape the blaze.

While the fire had been extinguished by 2am on Sunday morning, units remained on the scene until 7am.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
