Gas users in Galway and Mayo told to turn off supply for up to 72 hours
The odourless gas would not be detectable in the event of a gas leak.
NATURAL GAS CUSTOMERS in Galway and Mayo have been told to turn off their gas supplies for up to 72 hours as odourless gas has entered the network.
In a safety notice issued on their website Gas Networks Ireland urged people to turn off their gas supply at the valve in their meter box.
Gas is naturally odourless but a smell is added for safety purposes so people can detect it in the event of a leak.
Customers in Galway, Tuam, Headford, Ballinrobe, Claremorris, Castlebar, Westport, Crossmolina and Ballina are affected by the notice.
“We are recommending this action because in the unlikely event of a leak customers in these locations only, will be unable to smell gas in the current circumstances,” Gas Networks Ireland said.
We are working with the Corrib operator to resolve this issue and remove the un-odourised gas from the network in a safe and controlled fashion.
The company added that the issue could take up to 72 hours to resolve.
