THE ANNUAL RATE OF inflation fell in October to 1.2 per cent, down from 1.6 per cent in September, according to figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

The most notable change last month was a fall in transport prices  of 2.7 per cent  mainly due to a decrease in airfares and lower petrol and diesel prices.

The CSO said consumer prices for education rose 4.6 per cent in October due to the increase in third level costs.

Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels increased 1.2 per cent mainly due to higher charges for electricity and gas though prices are still 3.3 per cent lower than October last year.

In the year to October the biggest increases were in education and transport while furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance prices eased by 2.7 per cent.

Alcoholic beverages and tobacco also saw increased prices in the year to October of 3.5 per cent.
