Do you know more than our readers about Ireland’s energy system?

Energy is at the heart of everything we do, but how well do you understand it?

WHETHER IT’S THROUGH the lens of sustainability, reaching our climate targets, or even just paying our bills, many of us will spend much of our time thinking about energy.

But how much do we really understand about Ireland’s energy system? Do we know where our energy comes from, or how our energy production is divided between various sources?

Gas Networks Ireland is currently in the process of transforming Ireland’s energy system, transitioning towards renewable sources of energy like biomethane and green hydrogen. Using Gas Networks Ireland’s network of pipelines, biomethane is on course to provide 10% of Ireland’s gas by 2030.

Gas Networks Ireland is working towards a repurposed, right-sized, and fully decarbonised gas network by 2045. Its “Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network” outlines a vision to transform today’s network into two distinct systems, one carrying biomethane and the other dedicated to green hydrogen.

Together, these renewable gases could comprise a future mix of approximately 30% biomethane and 70% green hydrogen, unlocking long-term potential not only for domestic energy supply but also for renewable energy export.
