The Constitution states that the president when entering office must make a declaration “in the presence of Almighty God”.
PRESIDENT-ELECT CATHERINE CONNOLLY will be inaugurated at Dublin Castle tomorrow.
Under the Constitution, the incoming president must take an oath that begins: “In the presence of Almighty God, I do solemnly and sincerely promise and declare…” and ends with, “May God direct and sustain me.”
As Ireland has become more secular in recent years, the inclusion of religious language in the presidential oath has occasionally prompted discussion about its place in modern Ireland.
So, today we’re asking: Should references to religion be removed from the presidential oath?
