Irishman charged with murder of American nurse in Hungary

The unnamed man is accused of murdering 31-year-old Mackenzie Michalski and hiding her body in a suitcase in a forest.

A 38-YEAR-OLD IRISHMAN has been charged with the murder of an American nurse in Hungary last year.

The man has yet to be identified. According to the indictment, the man travelled a lot due to his work and arrived in Budapest on 28 October, 2024.

The victim, 31-year-old Mackenzie Michalski, arrived in the capital on 31 October 2024, and met a man on the evening of 4 November at a nightclub. Prosectors say she went to the man’s rented apartment after the nightclub and the two began to have sex.

During this, the man is alleged to have tied up Mackenzie and begun to abuse her. He is accused of strangling her to death.

In the indictment, it is claimed that the next afternoon, the defendant bought a large suitcase and put Mackenzie’s body into it. He is alleged to have driven a rented car some 144km away and hid the suitcase containing her body in a forested area.

Prosecutors say the man travelled back to Budapest and was taken into custody by police the following day, who identified him from reports of his presence with Mackenzie in the nightclub. He has been in custody since November last year.

Once taken into custody, the man allegedly admitted to the killing of Mackenzie, but said it had been an accident. He brought police to where he had left her body.

A statement from the Hungarian authorities translated reads: “The Chief Prosecutor’s Office has filed a motion for the court to sentence the man to a prison sentence to be enforced and to determine that he cannot be released on parole. In addition, the Chief Prosecutor’s Office is also filing a motion for deportation against the defendant.”
