Funeral details announced for Jamey Carney as chief murder suspect remains in custody in Jordan

A funeral service will take place in Killarney tomorrow.

A FUNERAL SERVICE for Jamey Carney will take place on Wednesday in Co Kerry.

The funeral arrangements were confirmed on Monday. A mass will take place at midday at St Mary’s Cathedral in Killarney, followed by a private cremation.

The service will be live-streamed so that family and friends in the US, where Jamey Carney is from, can follow proceedings.

She was found dead with severe head injuries in her house off the Muckross Road in Killarney on 7 July.

A notice posted to RIP.ie on Monday said she is “sadly missed by her heartbroken family, her adored and dearly loved daughter Michaela, mother Kathleen, sister Devon, cousins, relatives, neighbours and many friends especially Lily and Liga”.

Dozens of people have left condolence messages on the notice.

28-year-old Ahmad al-Saqar, a person of interest in the investigation who was romantically involved with Jamey Carney for a number of months before her death, was detained in his native country of Jordan in recent days and remains in custody.

Al-Saqar had already left Ireland when the 43-year-old American’s body was discovered last Tuesday in the home she shared with her teenage daughter, on the Muckross Road in Killarney.

It is not yet clear what led to his detention as no Irish arrest warrant was issued. There is also no formal extradition arrangement between Ireland and Jordan.

The Journal previously reported that gardaí had contacted members of the suspect’s family in Jordan. Some of his relatives posted messages on social media yesterday, threatening to take legal action against people they accuse of defaming him and their family.

Speaking outside government buildings this morning, Tánaiste Simon Harris said that the “hearts of everybody in this country go out to the family of Jamey Carney”.

“This government will work and support the gardaí and go to the ends of the earth to make sure that justice is brought about for Jamey,” Harris said.

“Gardaí have a proud track record of working across borders and across jurisdictions,” he added.
