'Job Shadow' day to give people a foot in workplace door

Innovative project next Wednesday will see people with disabilities given a mentor for the day and a chance to explore different jobs.

AS WE’RE STILL not sure what the Government’s mysterious ‘Jobs Initiative’ in May is all about, here’s an interesting employment initiative we CAN tell you about.

The Irish Association of Supported Employment (IASE) has organised a ‘Job Shadow Initiative‘ which takes place around the country next Wednesday. Hundreds of companies have signed up to sponsor a person with a disability to work alongside their employees for the day. Those participating will get the chance to explore job opportunities and discuss job requirements with employers to better equip them to enter the workplace.

The IASE has over 900 members who work with over 5,000 people with disabilities – this is the fourth year the association has run their Jobs Shadow initiative.

IASE patron Sean Gallagher, of Dragon’s Den fame, said:

Job Shadow is a very real opportunity for job seekers with disabilities to sample the world of work and for employers to see their abilities as well as the challenges they face in everyday life.
