FINE GAEL AND LABOUR have taken an “unmerciful hammering” in the local elections, according to the Socialist Party TD Joe Higgins.

The veteran deputy for Dublin West was offering his assessment of the political landscape on what has been a bad day for the coalition parties with Labour bearing the brunt of anger towards the government.

Across the country, voters appear to have opted for independent, Sinn Féin and left-leaning candidates and in Dublin West the Socialists could be on course to take a second Dáil seat in the constituency.

Higgins said that the cost of living is “just hammering people” and that Labour is being “particularly held to account” because when it comes to working class people it has “stabbed them in the back”

He said: “We could predict that people are just thoroughly fed up of an intensification of austerity. People haven’t felt a recovery which has been all the government spin.”
