John Lewis Christmas advert sees father and teenage son bond over ‘90s club hit

Alison Limerick’s Where Love Lives provides the soundtrack, with Labrinth contributing a new version of the track for the ad.

THE JOHN LEWIS Christmas advert has become something of an institution and its latest campaign sees a father and his teenage son bond over a ‘90s club classic.

John Lewis said it is “inviting the nation to say what they truly feel through the timeless power of thoughtful gifting”.

The Ad, created by Saatchi & Saatchi, takes viewers to Christmas Day in a family household and we see a son in his own world with headphones on.

The camera’s focus then shifts to the father who discovers a present marked ‘Dad’ under the tree.

Inside he finds a vinyl record of the House classic ‘Where Love Lives’ by Alison Limerick.

The father puts the record on his record player and as the song begins, he closes his eyes and is transported back to a ‘90s nightclub.

But through the strobe lights, he spots his teenage son across the room.

His son begins to fade beneath the flashing lights and in between the strobe lights, we now see the son as a toddler, taking his first steps towards the father.

Another flash of the strobe lights and we now see the father holding his newborn son in his arms.

John Lewis said this is to show how the “music becomes a bridge between memory and love, between then and now”.

When the advert shifts back to the present day, we hear a reimagined version of ‘Where Love Lives’ by Labrinth.

The father is in the living room when his son comes down the stairs and looks on, slightly embarrassed, until his father pulls him in for an embrace.

John Lewis describes this as a “wordless ‘thank you’, adding that it “carries the weight of ‘I know we aren’t as close as we used to be but I love you’.”

Alison Limerick said she “squealed when I heard that ‘Where Loves Lives’ would be in the advert – literally squealed like an excited child”.

She expressed hope that the advert “will give those who see it a new, emotional connection with the song – especially with what Labrinth has created”.

Labrinth said he never imagined that he would “reimagine a classic and compose a piece of music for John Lewis” and added that he us “honoured to be a part of it”.

Meanwhile, Franki Goodwin, Chief Creative Officer, Saatchi & Saatchi, remarked that “music is always the beating heart of the John Lewis campaign at Christmas but this year it’s the gift itself”.

“The track threads through an integrated campaign that poignantly explores the power of a gift to communicate something we might not be able to put into words.”

John Lewis is also stocking the vinyl record seen in the advert both online and instore, with Limerick’s original version taking side A and Labrinth’s new version the B side.

All profits from the record will go to the John Lewis Partnership’s Building Happier Futures programme, which helps people who have grown up in care.
