IT’S HARD NOT to notice that Katherine Zappone is still beaming with pride in the aftermath of the marriage referendum result just over a month ago.
The independent senator was a prominent Yes campaigner whose own personal story was one of many we heard throughout the historic campaign.
After the comprehensive victory for the Yes side, a delighted and emotional Zappone proposed to her partner on live television as the results rolled in at Dublin Castle last month:

Her partner, Ann Louise Gilligan, said ‘yes’ although it’s with noting that the couple are already married.
In fact, their historic legal battle to have their Canadian nuptials recognised in this State kickstarted a decade of debate on same-sex marriage in Ireland.
That debate may now be over, but when Zappone spoke to TheJournal.ie this week we asked her about the key moments in the campaign:
And on that live TV proposal to Gilligan, Zappone insisted it was “spur of the moment”.
