Labour chairman says he has taken no calls about party leadership

He also called for an immediate renegotiation of the Programme for Government.

LABOUR CHAIRMAN COLM Keaveney has revealed that he has not taken any calls about Eamon Gilmore’s leadership role this weekend, .

Speaking to RTÉ’s This Week programme, the Galway TD criticised the party’s communication policy and dismal performance in the recent Meath East by-election. He said the issues raised by Labour during the campaign were not the same as the problems “occupying the minds of the electorate”, such as jobs, emigration and public services.

He also called for a renegotiated Programme for Government. Labour needs to demonstrate humility about the broken promises of the last election, according to Keaveney.

“I’m sure the current leader agrees the buck stops with him,” he said. “The buck has to stop with the leader and with the Cabinet ministers. We raised the country’s expectations, and it is important we honour those commitments in a renegotiated Programme for Government.”

Asked about Gilmore’s mooted move to the Jobs portfolio, Keaveney said that was a matter for the Tánaiste.
