Lithuanian prosecutor calls for lengthy term for Irishman

Michael Campbell was arrested in Lithuania in 2008 and stands accused of attempting to obtain and smuggle arms for the Real IRA.

AN IRISHMAN CHARGED with attempting to smuggle arms from Lithuania to Ireland for the Real IRA should face a 16-year jail sentence, Lithuanian prosecutors have said.

Michael Campbell, 38, was arrested in Lithuania in 2008 as part of an international sting operation involving Lithuanian, Irish and British police.

The court in Vilnius was asked by prosecutor Gedgaudas Norkunas to impose a lengthy sentence on Campbell for attempting to smuggle explosives and arms, and for supporting a terrorist group, the Belfast Telegraph reports.

Campbell has denied the charges and claims that he was set up by British intelligence.

Campbell, brother of Liam Campbell who recently lost his appeal against the Omagh bombing civil case, could face a maximum of 20 years in jail if found guilty, reports Newstalk.

The trial is expected to continue until the end of the year.
