Luas line from Connolly to The Point to remain closed for 'several weeks' after major fire

Luas operator Transdev originally said the service would remain closed for at least one week.

LUAS RED LINE services between Connolly and The Point Stop will remain closed for “several weeks at a minimum” following damage caused by Monday’s gas fire at George’s Dock.

Luas operator Transdev originally said services would remain closed for at least one week.

A large fire blazed for hours after breaking out shortly after 6pm at George’s Dock in Dublin.

In a statement this evening, Transdev said the fire caused “significant damage” to George’s Bridge, which carries the Luas red line.

The Luas operator said structural engineering assessments are ongoing and services will not resume in the affected area until the safety checks are complete.

Just before 10.30pm, the fire at George’s Dock was extinguished, The Journal‘s reporter at the scene witnessed.

However, firefighting operations continued into the night as the scene was dampened down.

It is understood that water was being kept on the blaze for several hours while efforts were made to crimp a gas line.

Once the line had been crimped, the fire extinguished itself.

Transdev said options are being examined for a replacement bus service to cover the affected section while works and assessments continue.

Currently, Luas tickets are valid on Dublin Bus services operating between Connolly and The Point.

Trams continue to operate between Tallaght/Saggart and Connolly.
