WHAT’S THE STORY?
1. The HSE has said it never asked parents to prove if their children still had lifelong conditions as part of a medical card review. Director General Tony O’Brien said today: “Questions were asked that were not those questions, but which may have been interpreted as that.”
2. One-time pop star Gary Glitter is to be charged with eight sex offences involving two young girls – aged 12 and 14 – that allegedly occurred between 1977 and 1980.
3. Ireland’s health watchdog has said that the Emergency Department at University Hospital Limerick is not fit for purpose and, therefore, patients are at risk.
4. Vodafone released a report today to show the extent phone tapping is used by governments to spy on their citizens…and Ireland was one of 29 countries included.
The telecoms firm received 4,124 requests of metadata and an unknown number of warrants for the contents of calls and messages. (Ireland would not allow that second figure to be released).
5. Following some dreary days on the jobs front, Yelp provided some welcome news with an announcement it will create 100 new positions in its new Dublin HQ.
6. And, finally, something to cheer you up on this non-Bank Holiday Friday. Look at this beautiful sunrise captured by photographer Naoise Kelly this morning in Wicklow.
