Bomb squad called in as suspected homemade guns found in Cork

Gardaí stopped and searched a vehicle after it was spotted acting suspiciously.

LAST UPDATE | 6 Nov

A MAN IN his 40s has been arrested after his vehicle was searched and gardaí discovered and seized three suspected guns, along with ammunition and cocaine.

Sources said the suspected guns were believed to be homemade.

The man is known by gardaí as a gun enthusiast who has been previously investigated for importing firearms and parts into Ireland.

It is understood that he had shifted focus now to allegedly building his own guns at home near Douglas in Cork.

As previously revealed by The Journal homemade guns are becoming more of an issue in Ireland – with several 3D printed guns seized across the country.

Gardaí on duty in Mallow, Co Cork noticed a vehicle acting suspiciously on Tuesday night, leading to the search of the vehicle.

The man was arrested and brought to a garda station in Co Cork for questioning under the Offences Against the State Act, 1939.

Yesterday, gardaí conducted follow-up searches at the man’s home in Cork city.

Experts from the army’s explosive ordnance disposal team in Cork were called in as part of the response.
