A MAJOR INCIDENT has been declared by Greater Manchester Police as multiple fires stretching an area of 6km on moorlands have caused over 30 homes to be evacuated.
The army is on standby to help deal with the blazes, which started on Sunday and persisted as the UK deals from a heatwave similar to the one in Ireland this week.
The 34 homes evacuated are located in Carrbrook in Stalybridge as fires continue to rage on Saddleworth Moor. A number of schools have also closed in the local area.
The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said in a statement this morning that firefighters had been working through the night to keep the flames at bay.
It added: βAt first light this morning, offensive firefighting on the moors has recommenced.β
There are ten fire engines at the scene, with assistance also being provided by units from nearby Derbyshire.
Throughout yesterday, nine fire engines worked to fight the blaze, while a helicopter dropped water onto the fire from above.
Public Health England have also issued guidance for anyone who may come into contact with smoke from the fire.
It said: βSmoke is an irritant and can make eyes and throats sore β wash your face with soap and water and keep hydrated by drinking water.β
Electricity supply had also been cut to some 250 properties in the Saddleworth area overnight as a safety precaution.
