Poll: Should there be mandatory minimum sentences for rape and sexual assault?
A man who pleaded guilty to rape received a suspended sentence yesterday.
THERE HAS BEEN widespread criticism of a suspended sentence handed down yesterday to a man who admitted to frequently raping his girlfriend in her sleep.
Norwegian national Magnus Meyer Hustveit, who told his girlfriend he had been using her ‘body for gratification’ for nearly a year, received a suspended seven-year sentence.
The Irish Times reports that the Rape Crisis Network is calling for it to be appealed, as the woman’s victim impact statement “made the impact of the crimes clear and it’s difficult to see then that there is no jail term whatsoever”.
