The two escaped with what Gardaí describe as a substantial amount of cash.

Updated 21.21

TWO MASKED MEN armed with heavy tools threatened staff before making off with a substantial amount of cash during an early morning raid on a post office in Cork.

Gardaí say the two males wearing motorcycle helmets entered High Street Post Office in Cork City at 9.20am, and produced what witnesses described as a small hatchet and a claw hammer.

The two males caused extensive damage during the robbery, before escaping on a high powered motorcycle parked nearby.

The bike was later recovered in the Ballincollig area of the city.

Gardaí at Anglesea Street are investigating the incident, and are appealing for witnesses or anyone who was in the High Street area, Cork City, between 9am and 9.30am this morning, who may have observed a motor cycle with both driver and passenger on board being driven at speed between High Street and Ballincollig, to contact them on 021 4522000.

They can also contact the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666111 or any Garda Station.
