Man dies after kayaking incident off the coast of Sligo

The man has been named locally as Paddy McCarrick.

A MAN HAS died, after he got into difficulty with the kayak group he was travelling with off the coast of Sligo yesterday evening.

Units from Malin Head Coast Guard and Sligo RNLI attended the scene just off Aughris Head, after receiving a call just after 8pm.

The man, named locally as Paddy McCarrick, was airlifted to Sligo University Hospital, where he later died.

The RNLI said that it received reports of a kayaker in difficulty at 8.16pm last night.

Rescue helicopter 118 also attended the scene, and lifted the man to Sligo University Hospital.

The other kayakers he was travelling with were brought back to Aughris Pier by the RNLI lifeboat.

The Sligo Kayak Club expressed its deepest sympathies to the McCarrick’s friends and family, his fellow kayakers and praised the Coast Guard and RNLI for its response to the incident.
