The 9 at 9 Here’s all the news to know as you start your day.

GOOD MORNING.

Here’s all the news to know as you start your day.

A new president

1. No prizes for guessing the story on every front page today.

Catherine Connolly won the election yesterday, securing 914,143 first-preference votes to Humphreys’ 424,987.

After her huge victory, Connolly will be inaugurated as Ireland’s 10th president next month.

Inside the campaign

2. Our politics reporter Jane Matthews reports on how the Connolly campaign gained momentum.

The campaign relied heavily on the skills and enthusiasm of volunteers.

“At the beginning, you wondered how quickly and fast it would grow – nobody could have predicted the way the campaign went,” one person involved told The Journal.

Getting on the ballot

3. Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said the Oireachtas may have to look at changing the process by which a person gets on the ballot in presidential elections, which he described as “restrictive”.

“I think there’s probably an issue with the restrictive nature of how one gets on the ballot, and that’s something that, collectively, the Oireachtas can look at,” he said.

Spoiled votes

4. Why did so many people spoil their votes?

We asked people and politicians in Jobstown, where some ballot boxes came back with around half of the votes spoiled, among the highest rate of spoiling in the country.

Dublin Marathon

5. More than 20,000 people are due to take part in the Dublin Marathon today.

There are various road closures around the capital – here’s what you need to know for getting around.

Tariff talks

6. Trump arrived in Malaysia today on the first leg of an Asian tour that will include high-stakes trade talks with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

While in Malaysia, Trump has co-signed a ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, neighbouring countries that recently saw their deadliest clashes in decades.

Mortgage interest relief

7. Business journalist Paul O’Donoghoe writes that the extension of the mortgage interest relief , which was meant to be a one-off measures in 2023, shows how hard it is for a government to stop ‘temporary’ spending.

Collision

8. A man in his 60s has died following a collision in Co Wicklow on Friday evening.

There were two cars involved in the crash, which happened on the R725, Rath East, Shillelagh, at around 6.50pm on Friday.

A woman in the same car and the driver of the other car were also injured.

Clocks changing

9. Don’t forget: The clocks went back by an hour early this morning.

Most smart phones and computers will have changed automatically, but you may have to manually change other clocks in your home or the clock in your car.
