Footage shows brutal attack on inmate in Mountjoy Prison

The footage features in tonight’s episode of ‘The Joy’.

CCTV FOOTAGE FROM Mountjoy Prison showed a brutal attack by two prisoners on another inmate who sustained a serious head injury.

The footage is featured in the second episode of TV3′s documentary series ‘The Joy’ which airs tonight at 10pm. In the new episode, a prisoner who had been on protection is assaulted in the prison yard by two other men.

In the video footage, one of the men is seen attacking him from behind and he is then kicked while on the ground.

Chief Officer Burke said it was clear the issues that meant he was on protection had not been resolved.

“I’d say it’s gang related, just different areas of Dublin, where he’s from and the prisoners on the wing he’s on at the moment,” he said.

Although it’s pretty severe, a pretty severe injury it’s not the worst I’ve seen. I’ve seen some pretty horrific injuries over the years here. Just another one to add to the list here in Mountjoy.

The assault led to the recovery of a homemade weapon, or shiv which fell from the inmate when he was attacked.

This week’s episode also shows the aftermath of a vicious attack on two prison officers who were bringing breakfast to a prisoner on punishment.

Chief Officer Burke said:

I was in the circle area when the call from staff was put in. First thing you could see was two of the injured members coming back up the landing and blood was literally pouring from the two of them. There’s a strange feeling around the prison after such a serious incident like that. So we have to try and reassure the staff going forward.

One prison officer said his colleagues injuries were “very severe”.

“There’s a possibility they could be maimed for life,” he said.

The second episode of ‘The Joy’ airs on TV3 tonight at 10pm.
