FORMER DEPUTY SPEAKER of the UK’s House of Commons is due to appear in court today charged with rape and sexual assault.

Nigel Evans MP resigned from his position and from the Conservative Party whip when the charges were brought against him by the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service last month. Evans maintains his innocence and has continued as a backbench MP.

He appeared in Preston Magistrates Court for a short hearing on 18 September but spoke only to confirm his personal details before being granted bail.

Evans has been charged with a total of eight offences; two counts of indecent assault, five counts of sexual assault and one count of rape. The charges relate to a total of seven alleged male victims.

The indecent assaults are alleged to have been committed between 1 January 2002 and 1 January 2004, the sexual assaults allegedly between 1 January 2009 and 1 April 2013, and the alleged rape between 29 March and 1 April 2013.
