Storm Claudia

1. Storm Claudia has begun to move away from Ireland this morning, but thousands of homes and businesses are still without power following a day of severe rain, flooding and high winds.

Met Éireann said conditions should gradually improve through the day, but warned that saturated ground means flooding and travel disruption may continue even after the warnings expire.

2. In our Morning Lead, a former Attorney General has said constitutional questions could arise in certain scenarios if Ireland were to avail of support from foreign militaries to plug a gap in security during the state’s presidency of the European Union.

Labour party conference

3. Ahead of the Labour Party’s annual conference in Limerick today, TD Conor Sheehan accused Fine Gael of misrepresenting drug decriminalisation during the last election and criticised Simon Harris for what he called a populist, reactionary approach to drugs, migration, and housing policy.

Trump vs BBC

4. US President Donald Trump has said he would sue the BBC for up to $5 billion after the British broadcaster apologised for a misleading edit of one of his speeches but said it would not pay damages.

5. Ireland under-17s have progressed to the last 16 of the World Cup after a dramatic penalty shootout against Canada yesterday.

It was a tough defeat for the under-21s, but the rattled England for an hour before conceding two second-half goals.

Sweden bus crash

6. A double-decker bus crashed into a bus stop in Stockholm yesterday, killing three people and injuring three others, police said.

Trump -Epstein links

7. Trump has ordered an investigation into links between Jeffrey Epstein and ex-president Bill Clinton, as he seeks to deflect growing questions about his own ties to the late sex offender.

Under mounting pressure from the release of a new trove of Epstein emails, Trump also demanded the Justice Department and FBI probe banking giant JPMorgan Chase and ex-Harvard president Larry Summers, who served as Clinton’s treasury secretary.

Cocaine seizure

8. Gardaí have arrested five people after drugs worth an estimated €2.1 million were seized in Dublin and Wicklow.

Residential addresses in the Dublin and Wicklow were searched and 98 kilos of cannabis and two kilos of cocaine with a combined estimated street value of €2.1 million were seized.

US tariffs

The US government announced yesterday that it was scrapping U.S. tariffs on beef, coffee, tropical fruits and a broad swath of other commodities, a dramatic move that comes amid mounting pressure on his administration to better combat high consumer prices.
