Nine horses injured in collision with train in Wexford

The horses were struck by a train on railway tracks close to Enniscorthy in the early hours of this morning.

UP TO NINE horses have been injured after they were struck by a train on railway tracks close to Enniscorthy early this morning.

The collision caused damage to the train and the line is currently closed between Rosslare and Enniscorthy

Passengers on the train, which was travelling from Rosslare in Wexford to Pearse Street in Dublin, were forced to stay on board for around two and a half hours before being allowed off to continue their journey by road.

The accident happened shortly after 6am,  around 30 minutes after the train had left from Rosslare.

Nine horses were involved in the collision. It is not yet known how many of the animals survived or how they came to be on the railway tracks.

Ianród Éireann has said that engineers are currently on site assessing the damage and trying to get the train moving again.

A bus transfer will remain in place until further notice to and from all station between Rosslare and Bray, and customers can make use of DART services to and from Bray.
