Police investigating death of teenage boxer after amateur bout

The young man received medical treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

POLICE IN THE UK are investigating the death of a 17-year-old boxer who died shortly after an amateur match.

The teenager from Ripley – to the north of Derby – died shortly after the bout, according to a statement from Derbyshire police.

According to the force:

We were called to the Post Mill Centre at South Normanton at 10.17pm yesterday after the youth had collapsed in the ring.
The young man had been given medical treatment by professional medics at the match, which was continued by paramedics, but he was pronounced dead on arrival at Kingsmill Hospital.

A post mortem examination to determine the cause of his death and a formal identification will take place in the next few days, police said.

At this stage there don’t appear to be any suspicious circumstances – but police are appealing to people who were at the event and who may have footage to contact them.

A statement from the Board of English Boxing, the governing body, said:

It is with great sadness that the Board of England Boxing, the governing body for boxing in England, can confirm that a boxer died last night following a bout at an England Boxing sanctioned event in Derby.
We are extremely saddened by this and would like to express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the person involved in this terrible and shocking incident.
The Board of England Boxing has set-up an investigation to establish the facts of what happened and will provide an update when we know more.
We are also asking all of the England Boxing coaches, officials and volunteers that were present on the night to co-operate with the police investigation and assist the authorities in any way they can.
