LEO VARADKAR IS poised to take over as Taoiseach next week, in the wake of his election to the leadership of Fine Gael on Friday.
Already the speculation has begun on when he might call an election. The confidence and supply arrangement with Fianna Fáil covers at least three budgets – but, given the nature of the minority government set-up, the current Dáil could end at any point before that deal comes to a conclusion.
Micheál Martin, based on the latest polls, is the most likely alternative Taoiseach.
