EARLIER THIS WEEK Northern Ireland’s Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness told a newspaper that he would like to see a referendum on whether Northern Ireland should join the Republic.
His calls for a 2015/2016 vote were backed by other members of the Sinn Féin party but were deemed unrealistic by the Democratic Unionist Party.
The topic has been raised following the Scottish government’s announcement that it wants to hold a referendum on independence in 2014.
McGuinness said he hopes for a referendum some time between 2016 and 2021 and does not see any reason why it would not be considered.
Finance spokesperson for Sinn Féin Pearse Doherty said he believes such a union would be economically beneficial for the 32 counties.
However, DUP’s Peter Weir said the Northern Irish economy is better served in the UK, than it would be in a united Ireland.
Would you like to see a referendum held in the North asking about a united Ireland?
