RTÉ is going to be airing a three-day live television event ...all about the weather

The live event is part of RTÉ’s upcoming Science Week.

RTÉ HAS ANNOUNCED a three-day live television event, Weather Live, which will air live from the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin, as part of the station’s upcoming Science Week.

The new, formatted show, will be presented by Kathryn Thomas and will feature Met Éireann’s Evelyn Cusack, Gerald Fleming and Gerry Murphy, to talk about one of Ireland’s favourite obsessions – the weather.

The show will air between 7pm and 8pm from Wednesday 15 November to Thursday 17 November.

Science Week, presented with the support of Science Foundation Ireland, will span factual, news, weather and lifestyle programming. It runs from 13 to 19 November.

Aside from Weather Live, the week will feature themed content across RTÉ Player, video clips featuring science experiments, and a number of long-form written pieces by science experts on RTÉ’s website.

During Science Week, RTÉ Youtube channel will feature a series of specially commissioned short features, including three from Weather Live and two from Dara O’Briain.

RTÉ Archives will mark Science Week on RTÉ by digging out science-themed content from the past, including a series of weather-related clips.

The week has a lot in store for children too, with RTÉjr airing Brainfreeze, a selection of 13 short pieces being dropped into a range of programming, while season one and two of Wonder What will make a return to the schedule. News2Day will have a host of reports focused on science and technology throughout the week.

Sticking with the weather theme, the current RTÉ Guide magazine includes a pullout poster all about weather.

“RTÉ seeks to engage its audiences through informative, entertaining, thought-provoking and relevant programming,” Colm O’Callaghan, Ceannasaí Cláracha Gaeilge, Education and Science at RTÉ said.

“Science and technology play an increasingly pivotal role in our everyday lives and it’s important that we put that under the microscope and help out audiences explore and understand the world around us,” he said.

Keep up to date will Science Week from RTÉ here.

He was good…even better was Gay’s reaction. He demonstrates Ireland’s conservative backwardness brilliantly with some great facial expressions. Bit like DeValera who only needed to look into his own heart to know what the people wanted. Gaybo just acted it. How will Ireland react!

Its true philosophers have been saying these things for hundreds of years. But in Ireland even with “one of the best education systems in the western world” we are a little behind.

Pity Father Ted only had 25 episodes.

We would all be better off without Religion but instead the world is becoming even more fanatical about religion. Why do we need religion to believe in an afterlife, We can explore modern science and the mysterious of the Universe and come to our own conclusions. We do not need religion dictating to us.

Why should the amount of abuse matter? The fact that they covered up even one case is appalling. It’s doesn’t matter if families were to blame, more often than not, the church knew about it and stood idly by because “God” would punish them if they said anything.

Stage left its the cover ups that were the issue. Those cover ups went all the way to the Vatican so even though you say the percentage of abuse was small the fact that the rcc stood squarely with these abusers says it all. Also the torture & rape carried out by the church on men women & children in Ireland was horrific. If you can justify it says a lot about your thinking.

I dunno what all the fuss was about.. As a “cra thumping Catholic” i wasnt in the least bit offended.. Just a little taken aback at the anger he had for a God that he believes doesnt exist.????

The simple fact is he didnt grow up in a religious family. He never looked to the Heavens when he was in trouble. So how would he know if He existed or not. He didnt look for Him… He said it himself

I like Stephen Fry. He is a fascinating guy. He said some nice things about Jesus. And who know he just might convert like Oscar Wilde…

He wasn’t angry at “a God that he believes doesnt exist.” he was angry at the preposterous concept of a loving god that gives children brain cancer. He accepts the fact that life is cruel and children sadly get cancer but that god has anything to do with it is ridiculous. If anything Fry was being extremely kind under the circumstances.

    Paul.

I sure was. And his words were terrible tbh. But there was so much more to the interview than that 2 minutes.. So much more…. Stephen is a very good man.

He recognises that Religion has a meaning and a purpose for people. And yet Stephen has never appealled to a Higher Power. So he has dismissed God yet has never searched for Him. Strange….

I went through a period of non belief and searching for peace in everything but Religion. I didnt ever find it. But eventually i found my peace in God.

Stephen has been consistently unhappy throughout his life. Bad relationship with his father, cocaine abuse, credit card fraud, nervous breakdowns, suicide attempts.. Can you honestly say atheism is working for him?

So if he wasn’t an atheist, none of these things would have happened to him, are you seriously suggesting that ? All the things you have mentioned are attributed to him suffering from manic depressive disorder, a medical condition, not a lack of a belief in a god. Belief is not a substitute for certainty, no matter how cocksure you think you are about it.

Tell us Sinead, claiming as you have, to know where god is and where god isn’t, this should be a simple question for you to answer. Why does a loving god, protector of children, give children terminal diseases? Bearing in mind “his will” or “mysterious ways” don’t count.

Sinead I thought your god was everywhere? Maybe he should introduce himself rather than rely on parents. Seems a bit odd that the creator of the universe spreads his word through mainly inherited belief where most of his believers were “introduced” as impressionable children.

You don’t have to believe in an idea for it to make you angry. You don’t believe Muhammad was the profit of Allah but it makes you angry when someone is burned alive in his name. Fry isn’t angry at god because he doesn’t belief he exists. He’s angry at the blatant contradictions in the message. For instance, god supposedly created our free will but will let us burn in hell for eternity for using it. Yet people still claim he loves us. It’s nonsense and leads to real life consequences that lead to real harm, like campaigning against condom use in Africa.

I personally find great comfort in atheism. I know this life is all I have and I should make the most of it. There’s also nobody watching over me so my will is truly free. I’d imagine that Stephen Fry is the type of person who would see believing in something purely because they find comfort in it intellectually dishonest. And believing in god won’t cure him of a medical condition. I and other atheists don’t disbelieve in a god because we find it comfortable, we disbelieve because there is no evidence. Some would prefer to believe for reasons you’ve outlined. Knowing you will die and your loved ones will die and you’ll never see them again can be unsettling. But there is a beauty in this life right now that needs to be cherished, as well as the time we spend with the people with love. Besides, heaven sounds boring.

Sinead science did give him an answer, he was diagnosed with manic depressive disorder and a lack of belief in god is not one of the symptoms. I don’t know why you keep ignoring this very important fact?

Of course you don’t have an answer because you don’t know. You were pretty sure you knew where god was and god wasn’t but a simple question and you revert to “not needing to know”. There is either a non-interventionist god or there is no god whatsoever but based on the bible itself and what we see around us, there most certainly is not a Christian god and this was the point Stephen Fry was making.

You don’t seem to understand that it is not a belief, rather the absence of belief, and is neither here nor there as far as ordinary life goes. problems only arise when the beliefs of ‘people of faith ‘ impinge on people’s liberties, livelihoods and lives in general.

What matters to me is what is in my heart, and there is no thought out argument or critical thinking that can change that.

Its seems to me that most atheists feel violated by Religion (probably quite rightly) and atheism is some sort of justification for that. The current atheism indoctrinates against exploring other views with an open mind or heart..

It’s an interesting subject, but I have a point on the issues about science, medicine and God. Because of medicine we are living longer. People who suffer from life threatening diseases because of medicine are living longer. Ok. What about someone who is suffering and wants to end their life through euthanasia? Many people will say: ‘Its against God’s will to euthanise someone’. But, if it wasn’t for the medicine that person would have been dead and we all wouldn’t be living as long as we do. So, modern science is a bad thing for believers surely?

Eilish your argument is a little skewed yes there are man made illnesses we only have to look at the industrial revaluation and all the work born illnesses child labour rickets malnourishment etc but there are an awful lot more that comes from nature that are genetic, viruses, bacterial some children are born with terrible defects your argument about greedy people and money is also flawed no amount of money has saved any one in the end we all go the same way, it can of course relieve suffering, some of the psychological and mental illnesses can be attributed to religious beliefs going against nature always put man in peril but some religious views and ideology can and does make life worse, mans capacity humanity dose make a difference we strive to over come these difficulties with the big religious institutions putting obstacles in the way ie it is Gods will

Jason, You say you are open to counter arguments. Well here is mine. Yes there are some pretty nasty creatures and diseases in the world but these are not from God but are a consequence of man’s original rebellion against God which allowed Satan to enter the world and mess with it.

Dionysus was born of the virgin Semele who was impregnated by Zeus. Dionysus liked to ride around on an ass, preformed a number of miracles through his life time like turning water in to wine, died and rose again after three days and his birthday is on the 25th of December. Ring any bells?

There is nothing new in anything Fry had to say at all, it’s centuries old; but the media today is so conservative here it shows up just how closed off and unimaginative our minds have become.

I think Gays reaction was more a response to getting such a direct straight answer, such a thing is rare in Ireland or else where to be honest. When asking such a question most people expect a gentle careful PC reply making sure to curb around offence with any sensitive remarks or opinions. Fry responded so eloquently, so clearly and used such a profoundly made point, I believe Gay reacted to how he replied more so that what he said in the reply. It held no punches and hit with precision his point of view.

I really dont get why this is such a big deal. The points made by Fry have been the points made by most people I have discussed the possible existence of God with over the last 15-20 years.
Yet the simple answer/explanation for this is right there in the bible, right at the start too.
Thats how obvious Frys question is, the answer is right at the start.
Whether you believe it to be metaphorical or literal doesnt really matter, the explanation for suffering is explained in Genesis, in the Garden of Eden story. However the world began, God did not create these things but choices of man (again, whether it was a literal Adam and Eve with one decision or just people generally doing things their own way, is irrelevant) made these things happen. Look at how so many illnesses can be related to diet, which is controlled by corporate greed. Look how many tragedies are caused by man, including religious ideals with no correlation to God.
So again, why the big deal? These questions have been answered, the question is whether you believe the answers or not. No point repeating the questions though.

If anything your argument makes your god worse eoin. That a little innocent child should suffer for what others did. Of course that is a big theme in the old testament, doesn’t seem to Matter who’s at fault. Your family and bloodline will pay. You’re not really answering the question of why.he could easily fix it. He is all powerful? Well except with certain heavy chariots of iron.
He also is supposedly all knowing so id presume he knew before he started what the end game was,so why bother?
So god is getting his jollies from punishing people on earth for thousands of years for original sin. Give me a break. Utter tripe!
All this is to what end? This little ‘acceptance to heaven’ challenge on earth. We all get up there and in say billions of years when our sun has exploded and earth is gone and no one new is coming. You have your billion relations round. Then what? It was all for what? Another 200 billion years go by, all still there doing??? Ridiculous in the extreme. How can people run with this I’ll never know. If that’s what’s on offer he can keep it.

Religion is like Occult worship. A legalized form of witchcraft. its full of ritual and worship of a fanciful being that there was never any real evidence it actually ever existed in the first place.
churches are just as ridiculous as having a place of worship for the goat headed demon, the only difference is one is accepted by the masses.
both are the worship of some unproved other worldly occult being, both are as ridiculous as each other with incantations and ritual, for what is prayer otherwise?
    What is tradition?
its range of behavior and practices that have been handed down over generations that no one ever questioned if the reasoning behind the practice had any validity in the first place, its not questioned because it was handed down by our ancestors.
i believe that humanity is in its infancy and when it abandons all form of religion, human being will start to grow with true spirituality, i dont believe that you have to believe in a god to be truly spiritual.
if all religions were removed from this earth then prejudice and pettiness would be exposed for what it truly is!
spirituality should be about growing as an individual and a group for the growth of humanity as a whole.
i dont believe human beings at this this time have any real idea of what spirituality really is? it certainly not some recited words from a book!

It’s fascinating how so many people saw Fry as launching an angry debating-society attack on a God he doesn’t believe in. What actually happened was that Gaybo (and fair play to him for still orchestrating compelling telly) asked Stephen what he would say to God if he met him at the pearly gates. “If”: it was a hypothetical question, and a hypothetical answer, not an investigation of his lack of belief. If there was an all-powerful god who have you opportunities for a Q&A, what would you ask? If any of us can say we wouldn’t want to ask “why the feck did you create a world where his crap goes on, and why do you permit it?”, we’re a bit dim. It’s the same question philosophers, theologians and whiny teenagers have been asking for millennia. Fry just has better delivery.

Stephen Fry can express his personal views without setting out to attack anyone. He shows compassion and empathy. However it would appear that this has escaped all the ‘enlightened’ commentators on here who I am sure were all declaring ‘je suis Charlie’ not so long ago and completely missing that point also blinded by their view on whatever side of the religious argument they sit. One can be in favour of or against organised religion however that freedom of expression is a right for all and should be respected. Or maybe that’s just too simple altogether.

I’d be a peeved that he/she/it didn’t do a better job, and if was Yaweh Himself I’d definitely want to know what all that genocidal anti-woman crap in the Old Testament was about. I can’t see my morals or attitudes changing at all, but I’d be fascinated to see how his existence affected what we know about the origins of the universe and of life.

Agreed, tordel, it would be irrational to deny the existence in the face of 100% proof. As for any change in behaviour – what is the poster getting at? Is he asking if as an atheist I would change my daily routine of raping, murdering, stealing and blaspheming? Perhaps I would :-D

With anything I examine the evidence and make the best decision based on logic sense and reason. The problem with religious people they refuse to look at evidence hence the term blind faith.

Look at what blind faith allows people to believe! Stuff that’s completely irrational and nonsensical.
