Ryanair's Trapani flights diverted over Libyan assault

Military action in Libya has forced the closure of Trapani Airport in Sicily to all civilian traffic “for an indefinite period”.

RYANAIR IS NO LONGER operating flights to Trapani Airport in Sicily as a result of the military action in Libya.

In a statement, the airline said it had been advised by the airport that from today, it will be closed to all civilian traffic for an indefinite period.

All Ryanair flights scheduled to travel to and from Trapani after 7am this morning will operate out of Palermo Airport, which the airline says is some 35 miles from Trapani Airport but Google Maps suggests is about 60 miles away.

Ryanair has posted a list of the affected flights on its website.

Three military jets took off from Trapani Airport last night, although the AP reports that their destination wasn’t known.

Italian naval commander Admiral Luigi Binelli Mantelli said that an aircraft carrier with anti-aircraft equipment is in place to protect Italian territory from possible Libyan reprisals to the coalition assault.
