Six new 'eco-toilets' are being installed in the Phoenix Park

The toilets will be located at the Papal Cross car park.

NEW PUBLIC TOILETS are coming to the Phoenix Park.

The “eco-toilets” will be located at the Papal Cross car park and the GAA grounds off Chesterfield Avenue.

Currently, the only public toilets in the 707-hectare park are at the Knockmaroon entrance, in the visitor centre and the tearooms.

The installation of the six new toilets is underway, and they’re expected to be up and running within a fortnight.

The Phoenix Park and the Office of Public Works (OPW) shared the news in a Facebook post, which has had significant engagement.

“About time. Need lots more all around the park,” one person commented.

Another said there are eco-toilets at Dollymount beach that are “very clean” and odour-free.

Some joked that the photo shared was of the completed toilets, with one person saying members of the public using the facilities would be “a bit exposed”.

“You stand on top and aim into the hole on the ground. Would I be right?,” another said.

The public and politicians alike have long-called for more toilets in the park.

Previously, portaloos have been set up during the summer, the busiest time.

However, Patrick O’Donovan, who was once Minister of State for the OPW, explained in 2021 that it was not possible to install permanent facilities at multiple sites in the park due to there being a limited waste water system.

He also said that permanent facilities “may be subject to vandalism, and it would be difficult to maintain them to an appropriate hygiene standard”.
