SHOWERS OF SLEET and snow are expected across northern areas of the country tonight, according to Met Éireann.

North Connacht and Ulster will experience sleet, snow and possibly snow flurries over tonight and into tomorrow. Lowest temperatures are expected to reach -1 to -4 degrees, with strong winds.

Met Éireann has reminded the public that frost and icy patches are possible in areas sheltered from wind.

AA Roadwatch has urged motorists to take care on the roads – particularly if driving on high ground, and warns that black ice is most rampant on very cold days on wet roads, especially at night, on exposed bends, underneath trees and bridges and also on higher ground.

It advises driver to reduce speed as soon as a potential skid spot is noticed.
