Happy Stephen’ses Day, as many would call it.
IT’S THE DAY after Christmas – the beginning of the liminal period that is the week between now and New Year’s. Still, 26 December marks its own occasion known as St Stephen’s Day.
Today is named after St Stephen, who is considered to be the first Christian martyr after his death around 36 AD. His remains were recovered and later moved to the Church of Hagia Sion in Jerusalem on 26 December 415, and that’s why today is his feast day.
Across the border, the tradition is similar but is instead called Boxing Day. If you’re wondering why, The Journal has the explanation here.
