Child dies after being fatally assaulted at a home in Wexford overnight

The incident happened on William Street last night.

A CHILD HAS died following a fatal assault in New Ross, Co Wexford.

The incident, which is believed to have been a stabbing, happened at a home on William Street last night at approximately 11.45pm.

Emergency services attended the scene last night and brought the girl to University Hospital Waterford for treatment.

She passed away from her injuries in the early hours of this morning.

A woman and man (30s) are receiving treatment at University Hospital Wexford. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Forensic examinations will get underway later today. The scene remains preserved in advance of those examinations.

The Coroner, the Garda Technical Bureau and Office of the State Pathologist have been requested to assist in the investigation. A post-mortem examination will be scheduled.

Gardaí have appointed a senior investigating officer to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at New Ross Garda Station.

It is understood that gardaí investigating this incident are following a definite line of enquiry and are not looking for anyone in connection with this investigation.
