1. #RYDER CUP: Well, we did it – just about. Europe clinched a 14.5 – 13.5 victory over the United States thanks to a last-gasp victory from Graeme McDowell, who beat Hunter Mahan to grab the point Europe needed. A 14-14 draw would have seen the US retain the trophy.

2. #ECONOMY: The Department of Finance has announced that the Exchequer’s tax take for the first nine months of the year was broadly in line with the government targets – with excise duty and corporation tax ahead of schedule, but income tax being less than forecast. Because of the cut in government spending, the budget deficit has fallen by about €7bn.

3. #GAZA FLOTILLA: Mairead Corrigan Maguire expects to lose her Israeli Supreme Court case where she is appealing a 10-year deportation order. The order was issued in June after Corrigan was one of the activists aboard the Rachel Corrie, but the Nobel laureate claims to have been unaware of it when she travelled back to the country last week.

This morning Maguire was admonished for describing Israel as an “apartheid state” – while in the courtroom.

4. #ELECTION: Fianna Fáil back-bencher Mary O’Rourke has called for a general election – but one based on manifestos rather than political sniping. In a lunchtime interview on Newstalk FM, O’Rourke suggested that in the meantime, Fine Gael should consider entering into a ‘Tallaght 2′ where it would support the government in financial reform measures.

5. #BUZZWORDS: A new survey has shown that Irish workers despise the phrase ‘current economic climate’ more than any other recession-era remark. The recession euphemism beat off strong competition from ‘going forward’ and ‘thinking outside the box’.
