THE TAOISEACH HAS congratulated Irish lightweight Katie Taylor on her World Championship victory this morning, calling her an “outstanding and true champion”.
The Bray woman will head to the London Olympics this summer as world champion after sealing her fourth world title in a row, with a solid 11-7 win over Russian southpaw Sofya Ochigava in the tournament final in China this morning.
Speaking to RTÉ television after the fight, Taylor said: “It was always going to be such a tricky fight, she’s absolutely brilliant that girl is.”
“But I just have to thank God again there for the victory. I’m delighted really to get the win.”
In a statement released after Taylor’s triumph, Enda Kenny offered his congratulations, saying: “This was another brilliant performance.”
“She is an outstanding and true champion. She has made us all proud and lifted the heads of the Irish people,” he added.
