Schools will shut for seven days as secondary teachers announce strike action
The ASTI have this evening announced the dates of seven strike days.

SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS have announced they will strike on seven days between 27 October and 7 December.

The Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland (ASTI) said this evening that they would also be withdrawing supervision and substitution services in two weeks time.

The ASTI had voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action earlier this week.

Dates earmarked for action are:

  • Thursday 27 October
  • Tuesday 8 November
  • Wednesday 16 November
  • Thursday 24 November
  • Tuesday 29 November
  • Tuesday 6 December
  • Wednesday 7 December

ASTI President Ed Byrne said: “Recently qualified teachers spend five to six years training, including obtaining the required master’s qualification for teaching at second-level.

“They are then expected to teach alongside colleagues who have completely different pay arrangements for their entire careers.

The sense of injustice amongst all teachers is palpable. ASTI members are committed to achieving equal pay for equal work for all teachers.

Byrne said ASTI members will withdraw from supervision and substitution work from Monday, November 7th.

He added: “ASTI members’ democratic decision to reject the Lansdowne Road Agreement was met with an extreme and hostile reaction by the Government, including targeting young teachers’ access to job security.

“Teachers are reluctant to take industrial action or to interrupt the running of schools in anyway. However, we have flagged our serious issues well in advance and remain available and committed to a resolution through talks without pre-conditions.”
